Sophisticated statistics are changing the way many sports are being evaluated, both by fans and by the people who sign and pay players. Baseball was among the first; the practice was examined in the bestselling 2003 book Moneyball by Michael Lewis. Last year Lewis explored in The New York Times’ magazine how the NBA’s Houston Rockets try to use sophisticated data to evaluate basketball play. MIT’s Sloan School of Management now holds an annual and very popular Sports Analytics conference.
