Why would Philippe Gilbert look to fuse his lumbar vertebrae? Is this a strange new cycling technique? And does it work?
OK, they mean sanctification in a general, non-religious form of confirmation and elevation, but gee, couldn’t they choose less ambiguous words?
Preview – Liège – Bastogne – Liège | Cyclingnews.com
Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) could re-form his old partnership with Evans to take on the Schlecks. He is looking for victory on home roads, sacralisation as the best all-around classics rider in the world and even a few UCI World Ranking points so he can end the spring as the world’s number one. Gilbert also needs to save Belgian pride. No rider from the home nation has won the race since the late Frank Vandenbroucke in 1999.

Interesting story, sure. Inspirational? Maybe. Anti-social, possibly (especially if you leave near by or care about the environment! But ‘insurmountable’? Hardly.

The high school drop-out who became the boss of Australia’s fastest-growing sport is the man who defied insurmountable odds to bring his vision to life.

Nice review, Dave, but your wordsmithing? Hmmm. I like this PVR too but the ‘vulnerability’ mentioned (or not, if its venerable-ness is to be believed) is entirely up to how you secure your network. Yes, a consumer device with IT-abilities does leave scope for gigantic mess-ups, but what LAN-enabled device doesn’t have this flaw? Home networking is a WIP for everyone, really. Still, some detail here you don’t get in the mass media.

The problem with this is that you leave your files venerable to other users on the network and the outside world as well.

I think the writer means “fleshes out”, rather than “thrashes”. Maybe it’ll catch on, though?
Renault launches Twingo Gordini | Car News | Hot Hatchbacks | evo
Renault is relaunching its Gordini brand. It thrashes out the French firm’s hot hatchback range and further strengthens Renault’s commitment to the fast three-door, as rival Peugeot pulls the plug on its GTIs.

OK, OK, I’m pedantic. But “conquest” sales? Did he simply mean “win” sales? Or maybe there is an element of “convert” intended here? I remain unconquered and unconverted by his word use, anyway.
Kia Koup: first drive review | Review | carsguide.com.au
Watt says Kia research shows that many hatch buyers and coupe buyers are similar. “We actually think we can conquest sales from people looking for a hatch alternative,” he says. “There aren’t a lot of competitors in this market.” Like the Soul, Watt expects Koup sales to be modest. “But like the Soul, it is a bold statement for the brand,” he says.

I keep reading the word “wallah” in a context that suggests that the English word (procured from the French) “voila” was actually meant. As in “Look there!” Is this a simple mistake, where people have heard a word and taken a best guess at the spelling? Or is it a deliberate attempt to rid the English language of a French invader? Perhaps they are being funny, but it comes across as simply sad. Maybe it’s me.
Here’s an example: All I had to do was connect an Ethernet cable to my office network, turn it on, and wallah we were into the land of smart storage management.

Forbes mag says that Splunk.com‘s moniker is a play on “spelunking,” a term coined by IT specialists to describe sifting through mountains of machine data. Or so they say. In fact it’s a word that means “caving”, as in cave exploring. So to say it’s a coinage is wrong or a stretch at best but it is an interesting new use for an existing form.
That trifle aside, it’s an interesting company that uses indexing to assist trawling through log files for data mining purposes. They offer a free download which I haven’t tried as yet but will. It’s meant for IT shops and the like but anything that indexes alerts and log files can’t help but assist in managing anything ummm, voluminous and ineffable. Like IT generally.
